In nursing school, I participated in a rotation at a high-security mental health facility in Palo Alto, California. During these rotations, the students could not do much. Hospitals fear litigation and lawsuits, so the students roamed around and talked to the patients.

I wandered into one of the patient’s rooms with severe mental health problems; there was a warning tag at the door. Remember, this is a high-security, locked-up facility for a reason. Only big-time, dangerous, koo-koo-kaka insane people get the privilege. And let me make an insertion here because it will be important information as you read this.

To admit a person to a high-security mental health facility, you need to go through a protocol called 51/50. To satisfy this protocol, the patient needs to have a history of hurting others or themselves. One case won’t do it; they must have several documented incidents on police report files.

Anyhow, this lady had several beautiful drawings and paintings on the walls. They were stunningly gorgeous and well done, reminiscing a talented and advanced artist’s work.

I asked the patient if the paintings were hers, and she humbly replied yes. I started a conversation with this seemingly insane…
